The Highland Saucer
antique hand drill, machine parts, bicycle sprockets and chain, steel, wood, resin
I was commissioned to design and create this trophy for Piedmont, California’s 4th of July Parade. It will be awarded each year to the neighborhood exhibiting the best float design.
Since Piedmont is a virtual arboretum, I chose to model The Saucer after a cross-sectional tree cut. Instead of concentric rings, the sculptural form actually contains a giant spiral. The spiral is inlayed with pigmented resin. The saucer has a friction mount on its axel so that a spin of the saucer won’t destroy the worm drive.
